H&S 1: Induction (Health & Safety reps role and functions), 25, November, 2, & 9, December 2024, Online, Eastern & Home Counties region

This course forms the first part of the health and safety training programme. The course is for new health and safety reps, and those who have been in the role sometime but never been trained along with those in the branch who want to further understand the role and legislation that enables health and safety reps to hold institutions to account.

Course details

Course meeting dates: 25 November, 2 & 9 December 2024

Please ensure you can attend the entire course (all three days) prior to submitting your application  form. Please further ensure you have secured time off from your employer to attend.
Course meeting times: 9:30 am. to 4:30pm. 
Course time commitment:25 to 28 hours including course meetings & online exercises
Location:Online

Course content:

    The course will cover: 

    • the role and functions of a safety rep
    • how to obtain facilities and time off to carry out the safety rep's function
    • using the safety reps and safety committee regulations
    • employers' duties under health and safety legislation
    • a trade union and equal opportunities approach to health and safety
    • how to organise UCU members around hazards at work - including the Covid-19 pandemic
    • develop essential safety rep skills.

    This course will also introduce the 'it's your time' H&S campaign Workload campaign

    UCU courses are funded via members' contributions and Adult education funding drawing down by the delivering college.

    Information Facility time

    Online courses are no different from classroom based courses in terms of facility time. Time off for training is a right and one which should be exercised as part of normal industrial relations. For more info please see  Facilities and time off for UCU reps.

    When you apply for a course we will assume that are making a commitment to attend the course as advertised, and have secured time off from your employer. Please contact your branch/region if you are having problems securing time off.

    Important Before you complete this form, please be aware: You may be asked to register with the delivering college in which your trade union tutor is employed. Where colleges are drawing down funding for delivery you will be ask for your passport or equivalent identification details to register. This is a demand of the college who are following government requirements in order to satisfy public funding criteria. This is not a requirement UCU want to see and we are lobbying for change. However, as it stands, if you do not register with the college, your place will not be fundable.
