UCU calls on Labour to invest in higher education, not raise tuition fees even more

18 December 2024

UCU has today responded to reports that university tuition fees are set to rise above £10,000.

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: 'Yesterday it was reported that the highest outstanding student debt has now climbed above £250k so it is obvious the student fee system is broken. Therefore it is very worrying to hear fees could now rise to more than £10,000. This failed system has loaded students with decades of debt, turned higher education into a marketplace, and eroded staff working conditions.

'Just last year, Keir Starmer admitted tuition fees are unfair on students, hiking them further only rewards underperforming vice-chancellors, allowing them to continue to run the sector into the ground. Instead of forcing students to pay more, Labour needs to be bold and invest properly in higher education.'
