Levels of student debt 'frightening', says UCU
22 March 2024
A report by BBC News shows the highest student debt has now reached £231k.
Responding to the news, UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: 'Overloading students with levels of debt this high is frightening. When those working in crucial services like the NHS owe six-figure sums it's clear we need to urgently change how higher education is funded. Tuition fees have become a new form of debt bondage and must be scrapped. We need a new funding model that instead makes employers pay their fair share.'
