Welcome to a new academic year!

This is one of the best times of the academic year to recruit new members into the University and College Union (UCU), as new staff arrive, and our campuses spring back into life after a (slightly) quieter period over the summer. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to the college and ask all members to reach out and welcome new members of staff into the workplace.

We would also ask you to reach out to that new member of staff and invite them to join the University and College Union (UCU) because the more members we have the more bargaining power we have both at a local and national level. Explain to them, that UCU is recognised to bargain on their behalf and that we are the largest post-school union in the world. We cover universities, colleges, prisons, adult education and other post-16 training providers and our membership includes academics, lecturers, teachers, trainers, instructors, researchers, administrators, managers, computer staff, librarians, postgraduate teaching assistants and other education professionals. We understand the work that you do, and our size and specialist nature mean that government and employers listen to us when we represent your views. In further education, teachers, lecturers, and anyone directly involved with scheduled teaching or other curriculum delivery can join UCU.

1. Review of FE lecturer workload - Update following EWC Survey 2023

In October 2020 a review of the wellbeing and workload of Further Education lecturers in the 13 Further Education Institutions across Wales was initiated. The review is being carried out by a social partnership, comprising the Joint Trade Unions, colleges, and the Welsh Government, overseen by a workload steering group. The national FE lecturer workload steering group is a social partnership made up of Joint Trade Unions, ColegauCymru and Welsh Government. Please read the update from the chairs of the joint steering group which summarises the outcomes of the of the Education Workforce Council workforce survey undertaken between January and March 2023. We would be grateful if you would share this update with colleagues who may not yet be a member of UCU and encourage them to join UCU to support the work, we are doing on behalf of academic staff working in FE. 2. Education Support

Sometimes work (or just life) can be tough and there are many stresses for those who work in education. If you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, depressed or if you have personal issues or financial difficulties, Education Support may be able to help.

Education Support can offer free, confidential help and support, no matter what the problem is, in a number of ways, including:

  • telephone support and counselling
  • email support and live chat.

The helpline is free and available to all lecturers and staff in further or higher education in Wales, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Croeso i flwyddyn academaidd newydd!

Dyma un o adegau gorau'r flwyddyn academaidd i recriwtio aelodau newydd i'r Undeb Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCU), wrth i staff newydd gyrraedd, a'n campysau fywiogi ar ôl cyfnod (ychydig) tawelach dros yr haf. Hoffem gymryd y cyfle hwn i groesawu pawb yn ôl i'r coleg a gofyn i'r holl aelodau estyn allan i groesawu'r aelodau staff newydd i'r gweithle.

Hoffem hefyd ofyn i chi estyn allan i'r aelod newydd hwnnw o staff a'i wahodd i ymuno â'r Undeb Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCU) oherwydd po fwyaf o aelodau fydd gennym, y mwyaf fydd ein pŵer bargeinio yn lleol ac yn genedlaethol. Eglurwch iddynt fod yr UCU yn barod i fargeinio ar eu rhan ac mai dyma'r undeb ôl-ysgol fwyaf yn y byd. Rydym yn cwmpasu prifysgolion, colegau, carchardai, addysg oedolion a darparwyr hyfforddiant ôl-16 eraill ac mae ein haelodaeth yn cynnwys academyddion, darlithwyr, athrawon, hyfforddwyr, ymchwilwyr, gweinyddwyr, rheolwyr, staff cyfrifiaduron, llyfrgellwyr, cynorthwywyr addysgu ôl-radd a gweithwyr proffesiynol addysg eraill. Rydym yn deall y gwaith rydych chi'n ei wneud, ac mae ein maint a'n natur arbenigol yn golygu bod y llywodraeth a'n cyflogwyr yn gwrando arnom pan fyddwn yn cynrychioli'ch safbwyntiau. O fewn addysg bellach, gall athrawon, darlithwyr, ac unrhyw un sy'n gysylltiedig yn uniongyrchol ag addysgu wedi'u drefnu neu ffyrdd eraill o gyflwyno'r cwricwlwm, ymuno ag UCU.

Ym mis Hydref 2020 dechreuwyd ar adolygiad o lesiant a llwyth gwaith darlithwyr Addysg Bellach yn yr 13 o Sefydliadau Addysg Bellach ar draws Cymru. Cynhelir yr adolygiad gan bartneriaeth gymdeithasol erbyn hyn, sy'n cynnwys y Cyd-undebau Llafur, colegau a Llywodraeth Cymru, dan oruchwyliaeth grŵp llywio llwyth gwaith. Mae'r grŵp llywio llwyth gwaith darlithwyr Addysg Bellach cenedlaethol yn bartneriaeth gymdeithasol yn cynnwys Cyd-Undebau Llafur, ColegauCymru a Llywodraeth Cymru. Darllenwch y diweddariad amgaeedig gan gadeiryddion y grŵp llywio ar y cyd sy'n crynhoi deilliannau arolwg gweithlu Cyngor y Gweithlu Addysg a gynhaliwyd rhwng Ionawr a Mawrth 2023. Byddem yn ddiolchgar pe baech yn rhannu'r diweddariad hwn gyda chyd-weithwyr nad ydynt yn aelodau o'r UCU eto ac yn eu hannog i ymuno ag'r UCU i gefnogi'r gwaith rydym yn ei wneud ar ran y staff academaidd sy'n gweithio ym maes Addysg Bellach. Rhannwch y ddolen hon gydag unrhyw un sy'n dangos diddordeb mewn dod yn aelod o'r UCU - Ymunwch ag UCU.

2. Cymorth Addysg

Weithiau gall gwaith (neu fywyd yn gyffredinol) fod yn anodd, ac mae'r rheini sy'n gweithio ym myd addysg yn teimlo'r straen. Os byddwch chi'n teimlo eich bod wedi'ch gorlethu, dan straen, yn orbryderus, yn isel, neu os bydd gennych broblemau personol neu ariannol, mae'n bosib y gall Cymorth Addysg eich helpu.

Gall Cymorth Addysg gynnig help a chymorth cyfrinachol yn rhad ac am ddim, waeth beth fo'r broblem, mewn nifer o ffyrdd, gan gynnwys:

  • Cymorth a chwnsela dros y ffôn
  • Cymorth dros e-bost a Sgwrsio byw.

Mae'r llinell gymorth yn rhad ac am ddim ac ar gael i bob darlithydd ac aelod o staff ym maes addysg bellach neu addysg uwch yng Nghymru, bob awr o'r dydd a phob diwrnod o'r flwyddyn. 

I ddysgu mwy amdanynt a'r gwasanaethau eraill sydd ar gael, ewch i'r wefan. Neu ffoniwch Cymorth Addysg ar 08000 562 561 i gychwyn y sgwrs.

Mae'n iawn i beidio â bod yn iawn, ond peidiwch â dioddef ar eich pen eich hun. Mae help ar gael drwy ffonio neu glicio!
