Update on FE 2022 pay claim We are writing to update you on progress with this year's Joint Trade Union pay claim of 12%. We received a letter from Guy Lacey, chair of ColegauCymru on the 16 September telling us that 'I am seeking a meeting with the Minister for Education and Welsh Language as soon as possible to discuss the issue of FE sector pay for 22/23, to advocate the need for parity with schoolteachers and to highlight the significant inflationary pressures that the sector is experiencing.' We understand the real anger that some members feel about a below inflation pay offers we see in other sectors. The situation in FE in Wales more complex than other sectors and we wanted to lay out the facts, so members understand the decisions which your negotiators are taking on your behalf.
The Further Education Sector Committee (FESC) decided at its meeting on Saturday 24 September to wait until we have a response from the employers to our pay claim before holding a Special FESC on pay. Our situation is further complicated by the fact that we are making progress with the National Workload Steering Group and there will be 5 funded projects looking at ways in which workload can be reduced for lecturers, including a pilot workload allocation model to replace the teaching allocation workload model to be rolled out in three colleges. The purpose of these pilot projects is to establish the costs associated with reducing workload and phase five will be based on bids from the sector for additional funding. Your negotiators are concerned that a ballot on pay could derail the work being done on workload, which is why it was decided that a Special FESC needed to be called to allow branches to feed into the decision-making. If your branch holds a meeting on pay, please try to attend or if you are teaching let them know what you think in writing. This is your pay - make sure your voice is heard.
