Sandwell College strikes called off as pay talks progress

14 May 2018

Strike action at Sandwell College due to begin tomorrow has been called off following progress in pay talks.

Members of UCU at the college were due to walk out for four days this week in a row over pay, having already taken five days of strike action since February.

However, positive discussions with the college management on pay have led to an agreement in principle, which is expected to be signed off by both sides tomorrow. UCU has therefore called off the strike action ahead of tomorrow's meeting.

UCU regional official, Anne O'Sullivan, said: 'Following positive discussions in recent days which have led to an agreement in principle on pay, we have decided to call off the planned strike action for this week. We expect to formalise the agreement with management in our meeting with them tomorrow.'

Sandwell College was one of ten colleges where staff are due to take action over pay in the coming weeks. The disputes follow a below inflation pay offer of 1% from the employer representative, the Association of Colleges, in September. Strike action at all other colleges will continue as planned.
