Putting equality in the frame

24 October 2006

UCU is concerned to ensure that equality is placed at the heart of the implementation of the Framework Agreement, and therefore is directly relevant to the work members are currently undertaking.

Our key objectives are to ensure that:

  • every institution carries out an equal pay review in line with the JNCHES guidance, with the full involvement of their recognised trade unions, by the end of 2006 and commits to carrying out regular reviews thereafter
  • every institution carries out an equal pay review in line with the JNCHES guidance, with the full involvement of their recognised trade unions, by the end of 2006 and commits to carrying out regular reviews thereafter
  • every institution carries out race impact assessments of the introduction of new pay arrangements in line with legislative requirements under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act.

We are delighted that UCU's objectives have been endorsed and is being actively supported by the three equality commissions: The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) and the Disability Rights Commission (DRC).

This is ongoing work because, however much or little progress has been made at each institution in implementing the Framework Agreement, the duty to ensure equal treatment is an ongoing one.

We have to take the opportunity now, through the implementation of the Framework Agreement, to tackle the long standing causes of pay discrimination and the gender, race and disability pay gaps in the sector. We hope you and your branch or local association will get fully involved in this important work.
