USS pension update: new data proves case to reverse cuts

6 October 2022

I write today with incredibly significant news on USS pensions.

After requests were made by UCU, the USS Trustee has released data from its June monitoring report showing how the scheme would be performing if pension cuts were revoked and benefits were restored.

That data shows not only that restoring benefits would cost less than current contributions, but that it would still leave the scheme in surplus.

This is a huge moment in our campaign to win our pensions back - and a massive vindication of our union's position.

There is now no credible argument against revoking the cuts and restoring pension benefits. But being right won't make it right.

We now have to deliver the biggest YES vote possible in our USS ballot. That will show vice chancellors that we are ready and prepared to take action if they don't return our pensions to us.

If you have voted, well done. Make you tell others to do the same.

If you haven't, you must do so urgently.

Replacement ballot papers can be ordered here.

Yours in solidarity,

Jo Grady
UCU general secretary
