1. Education Workforce Council: the national education workforce survey for Wales. Have your say

The work that you do is absolutely vital to ensuring we have the best education system possible in Wales. As well as understanding some of the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, we want to hear what you think about issues that affect you such as workload, wellbeing and the opportunities available for professional learning.

Your voice is important to UCU, by responding, you will help us to support you in your role and ensure that our learners can enjoy an education that is of the highest standard. The results of this survey will inform a wider piece of work to review the workload of lecturers, so the more specific your feedback, the more likely it is to help inform practical actions and improvements.

The survey opened on Friday 15 January and will be open until Friday 12 March 2021.

2. UCU Wales webinars: open to members and non-members

UCU Wales are inviting members and non-members to take part in the one or more interactive webinars that UCU are providing for academic members of staff in Wales on Tuesday 26 January 2021.

There are 3 webinars on offer:

3. Covid-19 update

The new Covid-19 strain presents an imminent threat both to staff, students and communities. Following the Welsh government's decision to move into tier 4, we worked with Colegau Cymru to ensure that further education was moved online for all barring vocational courses until February half-term. UCU Wales expects colleges to use this time to prepare the workplace for safe return when circumstances allow. With respect to higher education, University Wales has announced that Welsh universities are currently planning to run 'digital first' strategies until around the middle of February. We are still in discussions in the prison sector, specifically HMP Berwyn in Wrexham.

Going forward, we are advocating for the following positions:

  • Communication must improve and return plans must be shared so that they can be critically examined and tested against settled expectations. There must be transparency and accountability.

  • Government has already agreed that the 'extremely medically vulnerable' should be removed from face-to-face teaching and had previously agreeing an informal protocol where institutions fail to abide. We argue the need to extend that same protection to medically vulnerable members.

  • There is a long standing difficulty with Public Health Wales risk assessment; which measures existing, as opposed to potential, risk. This must be addressed in light of the particular hazard posed by the new Covid-19 strain. We understand that institutions will re-do an individual risk assessment where a staff member requests that it happen.

  • The best method of building resilience and protecting staff is by aligning vaccination policy with the Welsh government's commitment to keep education open. As with France and Germany, frontline staff should receive vaccinations once the 60+ age group are complete.

UCU Wales officials are engaged in ongoing discussions with the Welsh government and institutions. We will update as the situation develops.

In solidarity

UCU Wales

3. Diweddariad ar Covid-19

Mae'r straen newydd o Covid-19 yn fygythiad difrifol i staff, myfyrwyr a chymunedau. Yn dilyn penderfyniad Llywodraeth Cymru i symud i haen 4, gwnaethom gydweithio â Colegau Cymru i sicrhau bod addysg bellach yn cael ei symud ar-lein ar gyfer pob cwrs, ac eithrio cyrsiau galwedigaethol, tan hanner tymor mis Chwefror. Mae UCU Cymru'n disgwyl i golegau ddefnyddio'r amser hwn i baratoi'r gweithle fel y gellir dychwelyd iddo'n ddiogel unwaith y bydd yr amgylchiadau'n caniatáu hynny. O ran addysg uwch, mae Prifysgol Cymru wedi cyhoeddi bod prifysgolion yng Nghymru'n bwriadu rhoi strategaethau 'digidol yn gyntaf' ar waith tan tua canol mis Chwefror. Rydym yn dal i gynnal trafodaethau â'r sector Carchardai, yn enwedig CEM Berwyn yn Wrecsam.

Wrth edrych i'r dyfodol, rydym yn eirioli ar gyfer y meysydd canlynol:

  • Rhaid gwella'r dulliau cyfathrebu a rhannu'r cynlluniau dychwelyd fel y gellir eu harchwilio a'u profi'n feirniadol yn erbyn disgwyliadau sefydledig. Rhaid sicrhau tryloywder ac atebolrwydd.

  • Mae'r Llywodraeth eisoes wedi cytuno na ddylai'r aelodau 'sy'n agored iawn i niwed yn feddygol' fod yn addysgu wyneb yn wyneb ac mae eisoes wedi cytuno ar brotocol anffurfiol ar gyfer achosion lle nad yw sefydliadau'n cydymffurfio â hyn. Rydym yn dadlau bod angen diogelu'r aelodau sy'n agored i niwed yn feddygol i'r un graddau.

  • Mae anhawster hirsefydledig gydag asesiad risg Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru, sy'n mesur risgiau presennol yn ogystal â risgiau posibl. Rhaid mynd i'r afael â hyn yn sgil y perygl y mae'r straen newydd o Covid-19 yn ei gyflwyno'n benodol. Rydym yn deall y bydd sefydliadau'n ail-gynnal asesiad risg unigol os bydd aelod o staff yn gofyn amdano.

  • Y ffordd orau o ddatblygu gwydnwch a diogelu aelodau o staff yw sicrhau bod polisi'r brechlyn yn cyd-fynd ag ymrwymiad Llywodraeth Cymru i gadw addysg yn agored. Yn yr un modd â Ffrainc a'r Almaen, y staff ddylai dderbyn y brechlyn ar ôl y grŵp oedran 60 oed a throsodd.

Mae swyddogion UCU Cymru wrthi'n cynnal trafodaethau parhaus â Llywodraeth Cymru a sefydliadau. Byddwn yn darparu'r wybodaeth ddiweddaraf wrth i'r sefyllfa ddatblygu.

Mewn undod

UCU Cymru
