UCU statement following far right attack on Bookmarks bookshop

7 August 2018

We are appalled and disgusted by the attack on Bookmarks book shop this weekend. This latest attack by the far right comes just weeks after the attack on RMT members in central London by supporters of Tommy Robinson. Both attacks took place in broad daylight on busy Saturdays in the capital.

As David Lammy rightly pointed out, "the normalisation of far right politics is leading to chaos and vandalism on our streets". We pledge our full support and solidarity with Bookmarks and will step up our campaigning work to stop the politics of fear, division and hate from gaining a foothold in our workplaces or on our streets.

Bookmarks will be holding a solidarity event on Saturday (11 August) from 2pm, with readings by prominent authors and solidarity speeches from members of the labour movement. More details here.
