Jobs at risk as south London college threatens to axe courses

24 June 2015

Twenty jobs and 150 student places are at risk in Bermondsey if Morley College pushes ahead with plans to axe courses run from the Lewington Centre.

UCU said cutting the courses would stop young mothers accessing the skills they need to get on in the job market. The centre provides courses in subjects such as maths, English and IT, and is one of the few that still offers crèche facilities.

A decision on the future of the centre is due on Monday (29 June). UCU says that, with no other venues that offer childcare in the area, students with young children will have to stop studying altogether.

UCU regional official, Una O'Brien, said: 'The Lewington Centre provides access to vital courses for people in the local community. We fear that young mothers would be particularly hit by its closure. We want Morley College to reconsider plans to close the centre and work with us to find a way to keep these vital courses going in Bermondsey.'
