UCU comment on Labour's apprenticeships plans

16 February 2015

UCU today welcomed plans from the Labour party for more apprenticeships. Labour leader Ed Miliband said private companies bidding for public sector contracts would be required to have two year apprenticeships.

The union said it wanted to see more apprenticeships available and called for three-year programmes to ensure that apprentices receive a well-rounded education, as well as the minimum wage.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt said: 'We welcome Labour's plans for more apprenticeships and the mandating of private firms to offer apprenticeships if they are bidding for public sector contracts.

'We believe it is time to look at a radical overhaul of what constitutes an apprenticeship and explore the idea of longer courses to ensure apprentices receive a more rounded education, and fair pay.'
