UCU comment on Liberal Democrats' education manifesto pledge

12 February 2015

UCU today welcomed the Liberal Democrats' pledge, on the front page of its general election manifesto, to guarantee funding from nursery to college. The move would ensure that further education colleges have fairer access to funding.

UCU said it hoped the party would set out in clearer details its other plans for education. With regard to further education, the union said it hoped the Liberal Democrats' effort to provide some parity with schools would be extended to college lecturers' pay.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'It is encouraging that the Liberal Democrats are putting education at the heart of their election pledges. We are particularly pleased they are guaranteeing funding for people studying up to the age of 19.

'Further education has been subjected to serious cuts while school budgets have been protected. We welcome these efforts to provide some parity with schools and would like to see a commitment to bridge the gap between the pay of school and college teachers.'
