UCU response to Government international education strategy
29 July 2013
UCU today welcomed elements of a new international education strategy from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS). The union said that efforts to encourage more overseas students to study in the UK must not be undermined by unhelpful government rhetoric on immigration.
UCU added that more public funding was required at home to ensure the UK remained an attractive proposition for overseas students and continued to develop as one of our key export markets.
University and College Union president, Simon Renton, said: 'The government is quite right to acknowledge the fantastic work our universities are doing and to seek to build on their success.
'However, if we are to succeed then the UK must remain attractive to overseas students and government rhetoric on immigration needs to be far more welcoming. UK higher education is one of our success stories and to build on that we need proper investment at home.'
