Political debate must move away from scapegoat searching

7 May 2013

UCU said today that the UK needed a proper political debate about its priorities and to push forward with policies aimed at stimulating growth and jobs.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's Queen's Speech, the union said political parties should be encouraging investment in education, not ignorance, and said it had concerns about politics which searched for scapegoats and fostered a growing intolerance of others.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Political debate at present is too focussed on searching for scapegoats and fostering an intolerance of others. We need a far more positive approach from politicians of all stripes. We are in a mess at the moment, but investment in education and jobs is the way forward and far more important than encouraging ignorance.'
