Milburn access report response
18 October 2012
UCU has responded to Alan Milburn's university access report published today.
UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Alan Milburn is right to highlight what a mistake axing the education maintenance allowance was. We also welcome the call for fee waivers to be turned into money that will help the poorest students when they are studying, not merely reduce their future debt.
'It is not surprising that state school pupils out-perform their privately-educated contemporaries at university as they have got where they are without the trappings of privilege. We need to have a serious debate about how we ensure all students achieve their full potential and how universities recognise that potential.'
