UCU Wales calls on the Governing body of Cardiff Metropolitan University to engage in merger discussions

18 July 2012

UCU Wales is today calling upon the Board of Governors at Cardiff Metropolitan University to engage positively in discussions around a three way merger with University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales Newport.

The call comes following the statement by the Minister for Education and Skills, Leighton Andrews AM, regarding the creation of a single University for South East Wales.

Bethan Thomas, Wales Support Official commented: 'UCU Wales has long advocated the need for there to be a three way merger between Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of Glamorgan and University of Wales Newport to create a new single metropolitan University for South East Wales.

'It is shocking to think that the Governing body of Cardiff Metropolitan University would prefer to see quasi-privatisation of the Institution through the use of Associate Colleges, such as the London School of Commerce, than proactively engage in discussions around a single institution.

'Therefore, in order to best protect the careers and livelihoods of our members and other employees at CMU, UCU Wales again urges the Board of Governors of CMU to finally engage, fully and unconditionally, with the proposals for merger in SE Wales. Moreover, if the Board of Governors at CMU continue with their intransigence in relation to the Welsh Government's policy for HE in SE Wales, then UCU Wales welcomes the commitment that the Minister will consider the use of his power of dissolution to put an end to 10 years of uncertainty.'
