Hairdressing lecturers facing the cut at Tyne Met College

5 July 2012

Hairdressing and beauty lecturers at Tyne Met College will find out tomorrow if they are to face to the sack or have their pay cut by as much as £6,000 a year.

12 staff in the college's hair and beauty section have been put at risk of redundancy and some of those that survive the cull will be moved on to inferior 'trainer' contracts with lower pay.

UCU said the plans, which are part of a restructure of the department, were an attempt by the college to deliver teaching on the cheap and an insult to the professionalism of staff, who between them have over 170 years experience of teaching in further education.

These latest cuts come just 12 months after Tyne Met made 25 staff redundant and the union accused the college of using the current funding pressures in further education as an excuse to make cuts.

UCU regional official, Jon Bryan, said: 'Nobody is blind to the funding pressures in further education. However, the college must not use this as an excuse to make punitive cuts and deliver teaching on the cheap.

'Staff in hairdressing and beauty, who have given years of loyal service, deserve better than to face the prospect of redundancy or substantial pay cuts. This is not a good way for people to be beginning their summer break.'
