Employment for Scottish graduates bucks UK trend
28 June 2012
The number of graduates assumed to be unemployed six months after graduation remains steady in Scottish universities, according to higher education statistics.
The figures, from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), reveal that only 7% of graduates from Scottish universities are unemployed, the same proportion as last year, which compares favourably with the overall figure of 10% for UK institutions.
While Scottish students won't have to pay back fees on graduating they are also likely to get a higher salary with average starting salaries for Scottish graduates at £21,500 compared to the UK average of £21,000.
UCU Scotland president, Gordon Watson, said: 'Job prospects for Scottish graduates are not only stronger than the rest of the UK, but the wages are higher and debt levels are lower. The Scottish government's investment in students is helping them succeed and helping Scotland to develop.'
