Invest in new industries now government told

25 May 2012

Campaigners will hold a rally outside the department of work and pensions (DWP) today to call on the government to urgently invest in new industries as a way of boosting employment and economic growth.

The demonstration, which has been organised by the Climate Jobs Caravan Tour* and is supported by UCU, follows a fortnight of events around the country aimed at raising public awareness of how investing in clean technologies can create a million new jobs and help reduce fuel poverty.

Speakers at the rally will include UCU environment co-ordinator, Graham Petersen, who will talk about the crucial role colleges and universities can play in pioneering research and training current and future workforces.

Speaking ahead of the rally Graham Petersen said: "Investing in new industries can create hundreds of thousands new jobs and can play a significant role in boosting employment among young people and economic growth. If the UK wants to compete with other countries in the long-term it needs to start investing in clean technologies now.

"Colleges and universities are ideally placed to carry out research and provide the current and future workforce with the skills needed to transform the UK into a low carbon economy."
