Students want more contact time as fees rise, warns report

17 May 2012

Students with the least contact time at university are the most dissatisfied, according to a new survey released today by the Higher Education policy Unit (HEPI).

The report says that although university fees will rocket to as much as £9,000 this year, there was no improvement in the provision made for students following the last fees hike from £1,000 to £3,000 in 2006.

UCU said the increase in fees is simply filling the hole left by the huge funding cuts the government has made to higher education and that universities simply cannot deliver more for less, despite the perception that extra money is coming into the sector.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The increase in fees means students are making up the shortfall in funding following huge government cuts to university budgets. In recent years we have seen a large increase in the number of students going to university, which has meant bigger class sizes.

'We are entering a very dangerous period for higher education. Students and their parents will expect more bang for the massively increased buck, but the reality is that universities simply cannot deliver more for less.'
