UCU comment on unemployment figures

18 April 2012

Responding to unemployment figures released today, UCU said the government needed to put plans in place to improve access to education and jobs, especially for young people.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'While the country digests more bombshells from last month's budget, we are seeing nothing from the government to tackle the serious issue of high unemployment.

'It is not just us who are concerned about the length of the dole queue, as a recent poll showed public concern over unemployment has reached a 15-year high. The government needs to focus on getting young people into training and work, not restricting access to education or finding ways to make them work for free.'

The union's comments come as a Mori poll for The Economist revealed that public concern over unemployment has reached a fifteen-year high.
