UCU response to government student finance package for 2013

8 March 2012

UCU has questioned the wisdom of the government sticking rigidly to controversial student finance packages for the 2013 academic year, before the impact of the new £9,000-a-year fee regime has been evaluated.

The union said it welcomed early confirmation that fees would not rise, but said the government needed to be prepared to be flexible if the 2012 package was not providing students with the support they need.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We are pleased the government appears to now recognise universities' need to be able to set their fees in advance as they plan for the 2013 academic year. However, we hope that the government is prepared to be flexible if it becomes apparent that changes are required to the student finance package.

'We believe setting a finance package in stone for 2013, before we have even had a chance to measure the impact of the new untried regime of 2012, would be foolish.'
