UCU questions Cardiff Metropolitan's legal challenge warning

13 February 2012

UCU Wales today said it had concerns over the motives behind Cardiff Metropolitan University's threat of a judicial review if they are forced to merge with the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales Newport.

UCU Wales said that a merger of south east Wales's institutions would provide a secure future for staff and students in those institutions. A new institution in south east Wales would provide the critical mass that Welsh institutions need to compete nationally and internationally, as well as providing a quality student experience for learners at the institution, whilst also contributing to the economy of south east Wales.

Lleu Williams of UCU Wales said, 'Whilst the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport are engaged in the reconfiguration process, we have to ask what is Cardiff Metropolitan's motive in threatening a legal challenge?

'There is a real danger that this debate on the new institution will only focus upon Cardiff Metropolitan University's agenda. Whilst the Minister has been forthcoming by inviting stakeholders to make representations on the best way forward, Cardiff Metropolitan's unwillingness to engage doesn't benefit anyone, least of all students and staff at those institutions involved.'
