Government announces review of college staff development

2 February 2012

UCU today welcomed the news that there will be an independent review of staff development in further education but said that in order to meet its remit it must hear directly from front-line workers.

The review comes after UCU members boycotted the sector's professional development body, the Institute for Learning (IfL), after being told they would have to pay compulsory membership fees.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'This review has been brought about by the action of our members who work at the coal face of further education. They spoke out against the current service being offered by the IfL and their views must be taken seriously.

'Our members were deeply unhappy about being forced to move to a system where they were required to pay for a service that did not meet their professional development needs. Both the review and the IfL need to recognise this.'
