Youth unemployment rises for ninth successive month

14 December 2011

UCU said today that a ninth successive monthly increase in youth unemployment figures had to prompt the government to deliver policies that would help the more than one million young people without work.

The union said current government plans would restrict young people's access to education, training and work as college places are cut, university fees increased and vital financial support axed.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said:'Today's figures are a worrying reminder that we need to do more to help young people get on. However, this cannot happen if the government continues to restrict access to education and a good career.

'Erecting punitive financial barriers to education and training is regressive and risks producing a generation with few prospects and little chance to alter their situation.'

Notes

UCU has produced a pamphlet, Jobs and education: regaining the trust of young people, which looks at the issues behind youth unemployment. You can download the document here: Jobs and Education: regaining the trust of young people [400kb]
