Influential report accuses government of getting its sums wrong

7 June 2011

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), today accused ministers of 'significantly underestimating' the level of fees universities would charge under the new fee regime, which UCU said was further proof that the government's funding plans were in disarray.

The committee's report warns of 'a substantial funding gap' for English universities which may lead to further cuts in higher education unless more taxpayers' cash is injected in to the system. UCU called for an urgent review of the current proposals and said that without a pause the government risked gambling away the future of universities and students.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The government has lost the plot when it comes to higher education and unless it pauses, like it did with the NHS, it will do lasting damage to the sector. It is clear it has got its sums completely wrong and that the entire funding model is in disarray

'By introducing a market and cutting institutions' budgets, the government risks gambling away the future of our universities and our children's' education.'
