Worcester College of Technology could face industrial action in row over jobs and pay

27 May 2011

Worcester College of Technology faces industrial action after announcing plans to axe 20 members of staff.

The job losses come just weeks after the college threatened over 100 lecturers with the sack unless they agreed to take pay cuts of up to £3,000

UCU today accused the college of using the funding difficulties in further education as a smokescreen to axe jobs and slash staff pay.

The UCU branch at Worcester College will meet next week to discuss next steps, but has refused to not rule out balloting members for industrial action.

UCU regional official, Nick Varney, said: 'The college seems more interested in inventing ways to sack staff and cut salaries than in its students' education. We all know there are funding difficulties in further education at the moment but they must not be used a smokescreen to axe jobs and try to deliver teaching on the cheap.

'Our members will now consider their next steps. Strike action remains very much on the cards, especially if the college does not withdraw its threat of compulsory redundancies.'
