UCU comment on Hutton review of public sector pay

15 March 2011

UCU today said it hoped that vice-chancellors' pay would finally receive the scrutiny it needed to stop embarrassing the higher education sector.

The union's comments came on the day of the 'Hutton Review of Fair Pay in the Public Sector', which is expected to recommend an independent committee tasked with setting a vice-chancellor's pay and clear targets the vice-chancellor must meet to receive the full package.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'One of the reasons vice-chancellors' pay has been so embarrassing for the sector has been the complete lack of transparency or reason behind the arbitrary, but usually handsome, rises. All university staff want is a fair system applied consistently from top to bottom.

'We have never opposed people being well-rewarded for a job well done; indeed this is a principle which has sadly applied more to the top than to those who have actually delivered and supported academic success. Vice-chancellors' pay has never been subjected to the same scrutiny as staff pay and we will be looking with interest at proposals to reward vice-chancellors if they are deemed to have performed well.'
