Fight to save local education and public services intensifies

9 February 2011

Teachers, students and trade unionists from across Kent will meet at Canterbury Christ Church University at 6pm on Thursday 10 February to discuss plans to fight cuts to education, jobs and public services.

The meeting, which has been organised by members of UCU and other trade unions, comes ahead of the TUC's March for an Alternative demonstration next month when thousands will protest in London. More details on that are available at marchforthealternative.org.uk

Canterbury Christ Church is one of many universities in the region facing huge cuts to its teaching budget, as state funding for arts and the humanities is removed. The south-east is also facing serious cuts to local authority and NHS funding.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, who will speak at the meeting, said: 'Thursday is a chance for students, staff and trade unionists from across Kent and the south-east to discuss an alternative to the government's punitive cuts agenda.

'The planned cuts will have a devastating impact on local services and affect some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, as well as reducing the life chances of young people. It is not right that the next generation is being asked to pay the price for a financial crisis they didn't create.'

The meeting is being held at room Lg26 of the Laud Building.
