UCU accuses college of breaking law in jobs row

28 January 2011

UCU today accused East Durham College of breaking the law as it looks to axe 73 staff. The union says the college has a legal duty to consult with recognised unions when over 20 redundancies are threatened and East Durham College has refused to do this.

UCU said the college needed to drop its 'stupid macho management style' and sit down with the union to discuss potential redundancies. UCU said failure to do so would leave the union with little alternative but to move towards an employment tribunal claim.

UCU regional support official, Joyce McAndrew, said: 'We want to sit down with the management to discuss these redundancies. Any reasonable employer would want to do the same and it is time for East Durham College to drop its stupid macho management style, to join the 21st century and talk to us.'
