Increased demand for university exposes the folly of government cuts

13 January 2011

UCU said today that the increase in enrolments at UK universities was further proof that the government was wrong to cut university places.

The union was responding to figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), which showed a 4% increase in enrolments at UK higher education institutions from 2008/09 to 2009/10.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Today's figures are another example of the demand for university and highlight the folly of the government's plans to cut the number of places at UK universities.

'Rationing higher education, and making it more expensive, at a time when we have such a difficult job market makes little sense. We will leave behind a generation of learners.'

The full figures can be found here on the HESA website.
