UCU Scotland in crunch university talks with Cabinet Secretary

4 October 2010

UCU will today hold talks with the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Michael Russell, at an event on the future of higher education in Scotland.

UCU Scotland will put forward its views on:

  • Higher Education in a modern Scotland
  • Academic freedom
  • Governance and employers attempts to remove redundancy protection
  • Funding and redundancies

President of UCU Scotland, Dr Lesley McIntosh, said: 'We welcome this opportunity for UCU Scotland to discuss with the Cabinet Secretary our vision for higher education. Scottish universities need sustained investment in order to be able to compete internationally and to produce the high-skilled graduates our economy desperately needs.

'Scotland has always prided itself on its educational history but we also need to make sure it has a distinctive future. We believe that it is time policy-makers looked seriously at the idea of business making a contribution for the substantial benefits it gains from a plentiful supply of graduates and using that money to increase funding for student support and universities.'
