A-level results - Generation at risk of being consigned to 'scrapheap of inactivity'

18 August 2010

UCU said today that it was a tragedy that 2010 would be remembered as the year when record numbers of qualified students - encouraged throughout their academic careers to aspire, and apply to, university - would be turned away from university.

The union said the coalition government's refusal to fund additional university student places, record demand for university and apprenticeships and an uncertain job market meant that a whole generation risked being consigned to a 'scrapheap of inactivity'.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'It is quite tragic that thousands of students will miss out on a university place this summer, even though they have achieved good A-level results and been encouraged throughout their academic career to aim for university.

'The government's refusal to fund sufficient places, but threaten institutions with fines for over-recruitment, means we will see thousands desperately fighting over the few places available through Clearing or facing an uncertain job market. With punitive cuts planned for both further and higher education we risk consigning a whole generation to the scrapheap of inactivity.'
