Further university funding cuts will damage country, warns UCU

22 July 2010

UCU said the timing of an £82m cut, announced today by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) as part of its revised grant awards made a mockery of government calls for universities to exercise sensible financial strategies.

The union also warned of the serious consequences that slashing university and college teaching budgets would have on the country.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'The announcement of further cuts during the financial year is a real hammer blow for universities and colleges. The timing of the news makes a mockery of the government's call for universities to exercise sensible financial strategies. The simple truth is that cuts cannot be made without consequences.

'If the coalition government pushes ahead with its punitive agenda, we will see teachers on the dole, students in larger classes and a higher education sector unable to contribute as much to the economy or society.'
