Report reveals rise in fees will hit university applications

21 June 2010

UCU today said a report from the Sutton Trust, that shows an increase in university fees would hit applications to university, could not be ignored by the Browne Review into the future of higher education funding.

The union's opposition to increasing the cost of university for students and their families is well-documented and it said today's report confirmed fears that any move to increase fees will have a devastating impact on applications to university. The report shows that the higher the fees the less likely students would be to apply to university.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'It doesn't take a genius to work out that increasing the already considerable financial burden on students and their families would put many off considering university. Families understandably want the best for their kids, but today's report confirms that increasing fees will turn university education from a realistic option to an impossible dream for too many.'
