Defending education, jobs and pensions central themes of UCU Congress 2010

19 May 2010

Defending education, jobs and pensions will be the key themes of this year's annual Congress of UCU. How to react to swingeing cuts planned for universities and colleges and a new coalition government are likely to dominate the three-day conference.

Academic freedom, fighting racism and combating privatisation are just some of the other topics to be debated by lecturers and academic-related staff from both further and higher education. From Sunday 30 May to Tuesday 1 June, some 400 delegates will gather in the Manchester Central venue for the event.

The union will also announce the result of a consultative ballot on plans to change the pension scheme of many UCU members at the event.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'A wide range of motions has been submitted by UCU branches for discussion at our Congress. I am really looking forward to three days of lively debate in Manchester. With the recent attacks on both further and higher education, our congress represents the perfect opportunity to reaffirm our position as the defenders of education.'
