UCU responds to widening participation at selective universities report

19 May 2010

UCU today said that a report looking at access to highly selective universities was a timely reminder that the current debate must not just be about how cost impacts on access to university.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'This week the debate about how to fund our universities has been far too narrow, focusing yet again on how much more students might be charged to attend university.

'We do not believe that forcing students into thousands of pounds of debt is the way to attract the brightest brains to our universities. The bottom line is that if you introduce higher prices for degrees you will have a situation where the richest students pick whatever course they like with the rest left to fight it out for anything within budget.'

The report, What more can be done to widen access to highly selective universities? will available from www.offa.org.uk/publications
