Protests at Southgate College in jobs fight

23 April 2010

Members of UCU at Southgate College will be demonstrating at a lunchtime protest on Tuesday 27 April against plans to axe 60 jobs. The 1pm event has been organised after shocked staff were hit with the news of job losses as they broke up for the Easter holidays.

Southgate College has so far failed to rule out making staff compulsorily redundant and UCU says the timing of its announcement, coupled with the uncertainty over the next steps, leaves the college at risk of being in limbo during the crucial summer term.

The union says it is not fair on staff or students to be expected to operate under a cloud of insecurity, particularly as we move towards exam season. The union is calling on the college to commit to no compulsory redundancies.

UCU regional official, Una O'Brien, said: 'The further education sector is a facing difficult time due to savage cuts in its funding, however UCU does not accept its members should bear the brunt of these cuts by losing their jobs.

'Tuesday's protest will be against the jobs cuts at Southgate College and also a wider defence of education. Making swingeing cuts to education now is an outrageous affront to the thousands of people who so desperately need access to it in these tough times.'

The protest will take place on the High Street entrance to the college
