UCU launches first ever survival guide for new staff in further and higher education

20 April 2010

UCU today launched the first ever survival guide for staff entering higher and further education. The Early Careers Guide is being published after a UCU survey of new staff found that many were not receiving the support and information they needed from employers.

The guide provides useful tips on a range of issues, including how to find the right job and what staff should expect when they start work. It also gives advice on classroom management and what members should do if they have a problem at work.

The guide contains first-hand accounts from younger members about their experiences of starting a career in further and higher education and features contributions from a series of education and trade union professionals.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'I am very proud to launch this guide. This is a really important resource that will help staff entering further and higher education to get through the early stages of their career. We created this document after surveying our young members. Many complained about a lack of accessible information from employers and said they felt unsupported in their jobs.

'This guide is extremely comprehensive and contains advice ranging from how to prepare for interviews to classroom management.  It is based on the real experience of staff in further and higher education and is packed full of contributions from younger members and experts in the field.'

A copy of the guide can be found here.
