UCU welcomes departure of Bournemouth University chief

12 March 2010

Members of UCU at Bournemouth University have welcomed the news that vice-chancellor Professor Paul Curran is to leave the university.

Professor Curran will take up a new appointment in August 2010 as vice-chancellor of City University in London.

The union said Professor Curran's legacy would be a climate of fear and intimidation which had a devastating impact on staff morale. Under Professor Curran 150 staff lost their jobs, students became increasingly critical of teaching arrangements and employment relations hit at an all-time low.

UCU said it is looking forward to welcoming a new vice-chancellor and expects a say in the appointment of Professor Curran's successor. The union said it believed Professor Curran's departure was the ideal opportunity to reverse many of the disastrous changes wrought under his leadership and to develop Bournemouth University in ways which focus on its strengths.

Bournemouth UCU chair, David Heathcote, said: 'It is no secret that relations between staff and the vice-chancellor had hit an all-time low. Bournemouth University has much to be proud of, but operating under the climate of fear and intimidation that will be Professor Curran's legacy shot staff morale to pieces. We are pleased Professor Curran is off to pastures new and we look forward to working with a new vice-chancellor to help move the university forward and to build on its many strengths.'
