UCU calls on government to simplify funding for further education

19 November 2009

UCU today called on the government to simplify the vast and varied qualifications and funding streams in further education.

The union said the current mess was likely to put off the very people who most needed access to education.

The union's comments come on the back of additional training places announced in yesterday's Queen's Speech. UCU said it welcomed the places, but added that it was unconvinced that a majority of people would know how to access the opportunities available to them, or have any desire to try and find out.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Yesterday's announcement of more training places is good news, but there is still a lot of confusion over different qualifications, how they are funded and who by.

'We find it hard enough to wade through the nightmare that is funding in further education and it's our job. We really do worry how people with little positive experience of education can possibly know what is available to them and how much it might cost them. Or why they would want to undertake the incredibly difficult task of finding out.'
