UCU responds to rise in university applicants

2 November 2009

UCU today said that all political parties needed to clearly set out their plans for education funding, as new figures revealed that competition for university places was likely to be strong in the summer.

Responding to the latest figures from UCAS, which show an 11.6% rise in the number of people applying to university, UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We know the power that education has to transform lives and welcome the encouraging rise in applications. We urgently need full details from all political parties on how they intend to fund higher education. Hiding behind the forthcoming fees review is just not good enough.

'Students and their parents have a right to know if the parties will properly fund extra university places and what levels of debt students will find themselves in if they wish to pursue a university education.'
