UCU warns against tuition fee rise
14 October 2009
UCU today warned the Tories against pushing for a rise in university tuition fees.
Responding to comments made by David Willetts, UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'Recent polling set out just how unpopular raising tuition fees would be with the general public and such a move is likely to cost a party valuable votes. Will the Tories, or indeed any political party, have the courage to make clear their policies on university fees before the election? We believe the general public has the right to know what levels of debt future governments might be planning to dump on students and to vote accordingly.
'We need a fair system where every potential student has the opportunity to maximise their potential. Increasing fees or the other financial barriers that so many students and parents come up against when considering university is certainly not the way to deliver that system.'
