Union calls for answers as Jaguar and Landrover trainees leave 'motor city'

10 June 2009

UCU today called on Warwickshire College and Coventry City College to end the confusion over the future of Jaguar and Land Rover apprenticeships in the region.

Coventry City College has been told that it has lost the contract for training Jaguar and Land Rover apprentices to neighbouring Warwickshire College. However, staff and students remain in the dark as to where the teaching will take place next year, following rumours that some classes will continue at Coventry. The union said lecturers and apprentices urgently needed to be told which courses were being transferred and why. It added that the transfer made little sense with such high achievement rates at Coventry City College.

Nick Varney, UCU regional official for the Midlands, said: 'We have been given no clear reasons as to why this work has been lost from Coventry City College. Results have been magnificent and many staff believe that the move has come about following a breakdown in relationships between the respective college management teams, rather than any academic or quality reason.

'UCU is determined to get to the heart of the issue and we deplore the anxiety and stress that current the uncertainty is causing students and staff. This looks like a behind closed doors deal without thought given to those who will suffer the consequences and still do not know where they will be next year.'
