Rising debts make it harder for students to do 'work experience'

26 March 2009

Responding to today's report on student employability by the Confederation of British Industry and Universities UK, UCU agreed that students getting work experience was important for their future and the UK economy, but warned that many are forced in to working just to pay back soaring debts.

Commenting on the new CBI/Universities UK report, 'Future Fit: Preparing graduates for the world of work', UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: 'The report is right to highlight the role work experience can play in helping students to develop new skills, but the reality is that many students out there are forced to stack shelves just to pay back bills.

'The cost of going to university in 21st century Britain has left many students with record levels of debt and it's important that governments and employers recognise this. Forcing students to pay huge tuition fees, on top of the cost of living, is the worst preparation they can have for entering the jobs market.'
