21 November 2008
Trade union activists in London will be calling for a united campaign to save jobs, defend living standards and oppose war on Monday (24 November) from 7pm.
Tony Benn and Jeremy Corbyn MP will be among the speakers defending the NHS, pensions, students, affordable housing and opposing global poverty and war at the University of London Union building on Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HY.
The 'Alternative people's summit on the economic crisis' will put forward genuine progressive alternatives to the economic priorities decided by leaders of the world's most powerful countries at the recent Washington summit
The event has been called by the UCU London Region and is supported by trade unionists from the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), the National union of Teachers (NUT) and the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
Sean Vernell UCU London Region NEC Member, said: 'Instead of an agenda of bailing out the banks and shoring up profits, we will be putting forward progressive policies that defend the rights of the people who most need help. This event will be a tribunal of the system that has failed the vast majority of the world's population.'
