10% of students to lose out on grants next year

29 October 2008

The government's statement that 'everyone with talent and ambition to enter higher education should be able to benefit from the opportunity' is clearly not borne out by their announcement today.

Ministers managed to get their sums completely wrong and DIUS now faces a £200 million shortfall in funding to meet the take up in student support. And it is students next year who will be paying the price for their incompetence.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: 'We may have "Stop-Go" in the economy, but we simply can't afford to have it over young people's aspirations for education. Now the country is facing a recession, the government should be increasing efforts to invest in the future of the real economy and ensure all students who want to enter higher education are afforded that opportunity.'
