UCU responds to university admission procedures report

17 July 2008

UCU today expressed concerns about extra burdens on staff in response to the Universities UK report on university admission procedures.

UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We fully understand that universities want to establish the best methods for distinguishing amongst talented candidates. However, we do worry about the additional administrative burden that extra testing can place on staff.

'Furthermore, we are not alone in voicing our concerns that supplementary tasks for students do not guarantee that students with the greatest potential will succeed. Those students who attend schools that have a history of encouraging their pupils to apply to institutions with extra application procedures will have a better understanding of how to coach their pupils through those tasks. Similarly, pupils who can rely on private tuition will also be at an advantage.'
