UCU responds to university applications figures

23 April 2008

UCU said today that any increase in university applications was to be welcomed, but that the real challenge is to deliver an increase in students from the poorest backgrounds not only applying to university but going on to complete their degrees.

Commenting on the latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), UCU general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'We welcome any increase in applications to study at university. However, the way full-time undergraduate applications are counted has been changed this year and that must not be used to mask a lack of progress being made in attracting students from the poorest backgrounds to apply to university.

'Converting applications in to students completing their degrees is the real challenge, particularly with students from poorer backgrounds. We still feel that the punitive funding regime is the main barrier to participation for non-traditional students. Ministers need to acknowledge this, especially ahead of next year's review of higher education funding and the likely lobby for increased tuition fees.'

This year the admissions service for nursing and midwifery diploma courses (NMAS) has been incorporated into the main UCAS scheme.
